ATHLETIC COACH JOB DESCRIPTION


TITLE: Coach (High School)

 


QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Previous coaching experience in assigned sport is desirable.
2. Has knowledge and background in the assigned sport.
3. The head coach must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through his/her instructions and actions.

 

REPORTS TO:     Athletic Director and HS Principal

 

SUPERVISES: Athletes and team assigned to him/her and assumes supervising control over all athletes in program when such control is needed.

 

JOB GOAL: To help each participating student achieve a high level of skill, an appreciation for the values of discipline, sportsmanship, being a team member, and an increased level of self-esteem.  In addition, to build a highly competitive athletic program in which students, staff, and community can be proud of on and off the field of play.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. To direct and coordinate the 7-12 athletic program in the sport contracted with USD #377.
  2. To be loyal to and work closely with the A.D., assistant A.D., building principals, and program coaches in implementing and adhering to the USD #377 Athletic Program Mission and philosophies.
  3. Provide input in the selection of qualified assistants, grades 7-12.
  4. Assign duties to all coaches (7-12), which reflect the USD #377 Athletic Program Mission and philosophies so that each one has a clear understanding of what is expected.
  5. Attend area rules meetings, turns in rules test on time and passes test at a level accepted by the KSHSAA.
  6. To abide by and respect all decisions of the officials.
  7. Turn in recommendations of officials for post-season play.
  8. To schedule and conduct a preseason meeting for parents and players to provide necessary information such as:
    1. Team rules, lettering policies, and school policies for activities
    2. Discipline procedures
    3. Injury, insurance and emergency release info
    4. Practice and game schedules
  9. Effectively communicate with participant’s parents prior to and throughout the season.
  10. To submit to the athletic director daily practice plans and weekly game plans.
  11. Enforce disciplined and sportsmanlike behavior at all times, and oversee penalties for breach of such standards by individual students.
  12. To place the health, safety and discipline of his/her players above the winning of games.
  13. Responsible for the team’s equipment.  Use proper and organized system for checking equipment “out” and “in”.  All equipment must be marked and accounted for throughout the season.  In addition, all equipment is to be returned at the end of the season, regardless of its condition, and stored away properly.
  14. See that equipment is not misused.
  15. Recommend purchase of equipment, supplies, and uniforms.
  16. Work with athletic director(s) to ensure that facilities to be used are clean and safe.
  17. The head coach or a designated assistant coach should never leave the building until the last athlete has departed.  In case of emergencies, the head coach should see that the assistant coach is assigned to assume the responsibility of the building and players.
  18. The last coach to leave the building should check the following:
    1. Locker room in proper order.
    2. Lights out.
    3. Storage room locked.
    4. Training room locked.
    5. Towels in proper order.
    6. Players’ equipment in proper place.
  19. Responsible for the players’ conduct at home, on the road, and as guest of opponents.
  20. Properly handle and appropriately document all injuries with the athletic director.  This includes doctor or parents properly notified.
  21. In all K.S.H.S.A.A. events, eligibility grade requirements and health insurance requirements should be met.
  22. Maintain necessary attendance forms, injury report forms, insurance records, and documentation of participation for lettering purposes.
  23. Responsible for completing an “End of the Season” report within four weeks following the last scheduled event.
  24. Perform such other duties consistent with his/her professional competence as the Board may from time to time assign.
